What is it about sunsets? The colours, the clouds, the sense of serenity as the sun goes down and another day is over. If you asked a hundred people you’d probably get a hundred equally valid reasons for liking them. We’ve rounded up our favourite sunset spots in Perth Hills Armadale and surrounds to help you breathe deep and let the day go. Or take a great shot for Insta, we’re not judging.

1. Lions Lookout

If you want to see the sun set over Perth this has to be one of the nicest spots to do it. Located off Welshpool Road East and looking out over the entire city, this spot also has BBQs and picnic tables if you’re thinking of dining alfresco as the sun goes down.

2. Smailes Park

While not giving a view out over Perth, Smailes Park in Roleystone offers beautiful valley views. The area has a long history of picnics and local outings, known as “Flat Rock” and used as a community meeting place from 1900 onwards. We recommend enjoying this spot with a picnic basket of Roleystone produce (Blue Sky Bread is located in nearby Brackenridge Village), a rug and a camera.

3. Mount Dale

The west facing Mount Dale lookout boasts uninterrupted views across the Darling Range. On an extremely clear day you can even see all the way out to the ocean. There’s also a walk trail which means it’s a perfect late afternoon hike before catching your breath at the top while the sun sets. The area has abundant wildlife so if you’re lucky you might catch a glimpse of one of the locals too.

4. Contour Channel Walk

One of the best kept secrets in the Perth Hills, this view requires a short walk but is well worth it. Forming a part of the Contour Channel Walk, this dog friendly spot gets Perth views with a decent dose of bush serenity.

Location: Access off Canning Mills Road, between Bullockbush Road and View Street

5. Champion Lakes Regatta Centre

You don’t have to go all the way to the coast to get a sunset over water, Champion Lakes Regatta Centre has a beach and plenty of water too. There’s lots of parking and a 5km paved walk trail around the lake if you’d like to get some exercise in at the end of the day. BBQ facilities are available as well as toilets, so it’s a great spot for families or larger gatherings of sunset watchers.

6. Lesmurdie Falls

Boasting two lookout platforms within a short walk from the carpark this is one of Perth’s best panoramic views looking out to Perth and beyond. After good rainfall there’s a waterfall lending a tranquil ambience if you visit in winter or early spring. If you’re looking for a sunset to take out of towners to, this one is it.
